Techniques to Reduce Stress
We all encounter stressful periods throughout our lives, some last longer than others and some are more difficult to manage. These techniques can be helpful for reducing stress, of course they should never replace the assistance of a licensed therapist.
Deep Breathing
A few minutes of slow deep breathing can help reduce stress by calming your nervous system.
Exercise
Regular exercise is a proven stress reduction method. Exercise is good for both body and mind. There are many mechanisms through which exercise can help improve mood, including the release of endorphins. I’m always amazed at the new perspectives I can find just by going on a simple walk in nature.
Sleep
When we don’t get enough sleep, it’s easy for stress to become overwhelming. Being tired can make stressful moments seem even more intense. Try to prioritize 7-9 hours of good quality sleep nightly.
Support Systems
Everyone’s support systems may look a little different, this can be family or close friends who you trust. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your supporters in times of stress. Sometimes just sharing thoughts and feelings with a trusted friend can help lighten the load.
News and Social Media Break
While staying connected to our support group is important, social media is generally not the best way to accomplish this. Instead, consider taking a break from social media and news, give your mind some space to rest without these constant distractions.
